Protective supervision is a service under the In-Home Supportive Services (“IHSS”) program that pays California residents to hire a caregiver, including family members, to help them live safely at home. To qualify, your loved one must have 1) a mental impairment, 2) a lack of safety awareness, 3) a need for 24-hour supervision to prevent self-harm from dangerous behaviors, and if your loved one is a minor, (4) a need for more supervision than a neurotypical child of comparable age.
